Maple City Band History
The
Maple City Band was founded in the fall of 1906 by Professor
Herbert Plagge immediately following his graduation from
Northwestern University.
When he left in 1907 to continue his education in
Wisconsin, the band continued to perform at concerts, parades and
holiday festivals.
Although the early history of the
band is lacking in details, there appear to have been at least ten
directors during the hundred years Maple City Band has
existed.
An organization of volunteer musicians, Maple City Band
serves Geneseo and the Quad Cities area, providing popular music
and atmosphere to Summer Concerts and Community Events along with
a positive, developmental activity for the area’s Youth through
Seniors.
Maple City Band has two fund-raising activities. First, the
Ice Cream Social and Concert held each July 4th.. Second, the sale of
advertising on Concert Season Program Covers, introduced during the
band's centennial season in 2006. Thus, it
depends upon the generosity of individuals, businesses and
community organizations to support its programs.
In 1990 the band established the Maple City Band Endowment
Fund which has made it financially possible for the organization
to operate.
